Material Value is a Space Divider that explores the value naturally found in wood as a material contrasted with industrially produced metal. The wood is Podocarpus that was felled, milled, and dried on California State University Long Beach campus by students and faculty. Embedded in the wood is a rubber hose that the tree grew around over time. It is a highly figured wood with warm yellow and red tones. The interaction of wood and metal is meant to incite conversations around the use of live edge in contemporary woodworking and the value in sustainable urban forestry practices.
